Split a List

Welcome to our new Audience pages! Please take our brief survey at the bottom of this page.

If you would like to manually split a list into multiple parts, you can follow these steps. Please note that we also offer the automated option of A/B Split Testing Campaigns, which splits lists randomly for each send. That option is recommended for most use cases. However, there may be occasions where you need to test multiple custom segments manually, or test those same cohorts repeatedly over time. The directions below outline how to manually split a list.

You can only split a Natural List, not a Smart List. This is because a smart list cannot be used as the source in Audience Builder for another Smart List.

Manually Splitting Lists

The process below outlines how to split a list into four equal segments, each with 25% of users from original list(s).

Segment List A

  1. In Audience Builder, select Generate List.
  2. Select a Source List (e.g. “Main”).
  3. Type a name for the first list segment (e.g. List A).
  4. Random Selection Size: enter a percentage (i.e. 25%) or an integer (i.e. 2500).
Note: It is recommended your query utilizes an integer if you are creating more than one list split
  5. Click Submit.

Segment List B

Repeat steps 1 – 5 under Segment List A, then:

  1. Give this second list a new name, such as “List B”.
  2. Change Criteria to is not a member of list.
  3. In the Value field, type the name of the list you first created, exactly as you wrote it (e.g. List A). List names are case-sensitive.
  4. Click Submit.

Segment List C

Repeat steps 1 – 5 under Segment List A and give the third list a new name, such as  “List C”. Then:

  1. Change Criteria to is not a member of list.
  2. In Value field, include both previous list names using the or symbol: | (e.g. is not a member of: List A|List B).
  3. Click Submit.

Segment List D

Repeat steps 1 – 5 under Segment List A and give this fourth list a new name, such as “List D”. Then:

  1. Change Criteria to is not a member of list.
  2. In the Value field include all previous list names using the “or” symbol: | (e.g. is not a member of: List A|List B|List C
  3. Click Submit.
